El Infante Don Luis de Borbón

Don Luis de Borbón era el último de los siete hermanos de Felipe V. Desde pequeño fue embaucado en la carrera eclesiástica llegando a ser proclamado arzobispo de Toledo, aunque pronto la abandonaría. Esta relación con la Iglesia se llevó a cabo con el fin de que un miembro de la familia real formase parte de la Iglesia. No obstante fue casado por un matrimonio morganático con María Teresa Vallabriga y Rozas, hija de un mayordomo de palacio, con la intención de que no pudiera ser rey puesto que su mujer no pertenecía a la aristocracia. Dedicó su vida a la proliferación de las artes interesándose por la caza y el cultivo de las artes, las letras y las ciencias. Desde el momento en que conoció a Goya se interesó por su pintura, aunque dentro de sus artistas preferidos encontramos también otros como Luis Paret, Boccherini y Charles Josep Flipart.

Del Infante destaca una de sus viviendas en Boadilla del Monte. Un palacete de estilo neoclásico que mandó diseñar a Ventura Rodríguez. En él atesoraba obras de arte, daba conciertos y acogía a creadores de todas las disciplina

No obstante, Carlos III temeroso de una posible aspiración por parte del infante al trono le hizo renunciar a sus honores y distinciones, y le exilió de la corte madrileña haciéndole trasladarse a Arenas de San Pedro. En la residencia que allí tuvo fue a visitarle Goya y fue allí donde realizó el retrato de la familia del infante en la que él mismo se retrata debido al afecto y cercanía que mantenía con ellos.

Otro de los cuadros que realizó Goya es el del cartón para tapiz conocido como “La Boda” en el que representa un matrimonio de conveniencia, quizá inspirado en el del propio infante.

A la hija del Infante, la futura Duquesa de Chinchón y esposa de Godoy, también Goya le realizó un retrato. A su muerte pidió expresamente que su cuerpo fuera depositado en el palacio de su padre en Boadilla.

Entre los años 2012 y 2013 se realizó un magnífica exposición llamada “Goya y el infante don Luis: el exilio y el reino” comisariada por un profesor de nuestra propia facultad Francisco Calvo Serraller, en la que se desarrolló todo el programa de mecenazgo que el Infante Don Luis llevó a cabo.

Mister Luis de Borbón was the last of the seven brothers of Philip V. From childhood he was duped into ecclesiastical career proclaimed becoming archbishop of Toledo, but soon leave her.
